About Mull

|
Mull is a large, beautiful, mountainous island off the west coast of the Highlands of Scotland. It has a great variety of scenery and a temperate but changeable climate. There are 200 miles of road on the island, so a car is useful but not essential. Our coastline extends to some 300 miles and provides a perfect habitat for otters, seals, dolphins, Minke and other whales, basking sharks and sea eagles to name but a few species that truly make Mull a naturalist's paradise. To the south west of Mull is the historic island of Iona, from where St Columba set out to bring Christianity to Northern Britain. To the west lies the tiny island of Staffa, famous for the spectacular Fingal's Cave - the inspiration for Mendelssohn's "Overture to the Hebrides". The island provides many opportunities for enthusiasts of natural history, geology and local culture. There is an Arts Centre - An Tobar - (Gaelic for "The Well") in Tobermory which holds regular visual arts exhibitions and performances. An Tobar has an amazing track record in its live-music programming. Visit their website to check out what's on. If you are into theatre, then a visit to a Mull Theatre production will add to your holiday experience. Again visit the Theatre's website for this season's productions. Numerous wildlife and sea trip excursions are available too. Several local inns offer traditional music in the evening. There are frequent "night events" - discos, ceilidhs and concerts. Excellent family-run restaurants throughout the island serve a variety of local and international dishes. To make the most of the island, visitors are recommended to bring sturdy footwear and all-weather clothing. |
